Cheers and Jeers: May 30, 2014

CHEERS to Dave Werner of Malone, who has devoted a great deal of his time over the years to making sure members of the public are properly informed on roadway safety issues.

Werner has served on the Franklin County Traffic Safety Board for more than 25 years, in recent years either as chairman or as vice chairman, his current role.

Here at the Press-Republican, we know him well because he often corresponds with us about articles he reads in the paper.

Sometimes, he writes to make additional comments or suggestions for editorials. Once in awhile, it is to point out errors, such as recently when a story about an alleged theft at the Mountain Mart store in Moira identified it as being on “State Route 11.”

“There is no such state route in NYS – it is U.S. Route 11,” Werner noted. “All state routes are totally within the state. Route 11 is a U.S. highway, starting in Rouses Point, NY, and ending in New Orleans, LA. The U.S. highways in our immediate area are: U.S. Route 11, U.S. Route 9 (going through Plattsburgh) and U.S. Route 2, running from Rouses Point to Houlton, ME.”

That is just a smidgen of the road knowledge that Werner has stored in his brain and his files. And he is always eager to share it.

He has given about 75 to 100 traffic-safety talks to clubs and organizations, senior citizen groups, schools (including every driver’s ed class at Franklin Academy) and local agencies and businesses that have vehicle fleets, including National Grid, Franklin County Public Transportation and the Malone Border Patrol Station.

He also speaks with town and village governments about the importance of following the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

Werner will be making his fourth presentation before the annual State Traffic Safety Symposium this October, and for eight years now, he has written weekly “Did You Know” traffic-related articles, available to newspapers and several state and federal agencies.
