Most communities in our area depend on tourism, at least to some degree, and visitors can be quickly turned off by trash along roadsides and an overall unkempt look.
Public works crews do their best to keep their municipalities looking attractive, but better results are achieved when citizens pitch in.
The biggest community in our area, the City of Plattsburgh, has been on and off on cleanup efforts.
For a few years, city councilors, led by former Councilor Amy Valentine, gave momentum to an annual spring cleanup. There was a good turnout of residents and service groups picking up trash and raking in a number of neighborhoods. But the effort eventually fizzled out.
Now, the city’s new Quality of Life Committee is talking about beautification projects, including a community cleanup day. We urge them to follow through on the idea. The committee meets at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, in the second-floor meeting room of City Hall, and the public is being encouraged to attend.
Other local communities already have cleanup efforts scheduled. Here are a few coming up soon that are depending on public help:
Champlain: The Village of Champlain will be picking up loose brush today, May 19 and May 20. All brush should be curbside by 7 a.m.
Chateaugay: Village curbside cleanup is today to May 23. Place bagged grass and leaves and small limbs at the curb.
Jay: The town Cleanup Day is 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today. Residents can bring discarded items to Town of Jay Highway Department, Valley Road. Proof of residency required.
