New York high school students ranked second in the nation in 2011 for scoring well on AP exams. New York ranked third in the nation regarding its entire educational system, behind Maryland and Massachusetts. New York is one of only 12 states in the nation that require teachers to have a master’s degree.
Many young people leave New York because of high taxes and the cost of living. Austin, Texas, and Charlotte, N.C., have median property taxes of around $2,000 and are growing with jobs for young professionals. Who will pick up the burden of caring for those who are not working?
Many states have one school district per county, one school superintendent, one school board, staff flexibility, one salary schedule, bulk buying, shared resources, one calendar schedule, same tests, same textbooks to be shared when class numbers change, same school supply lists, but still have community schools.
