WWII recognition

TO THE EDITOR: On the North Country Honor Flight, from beginning to end, the day was just wonderful, and I can’t thank the organization enough for making this possible.

Also, thanks are in order for the numerous people who turned out to honor our veterans at the sendoff and on their return home.

A big thanks to the Freedom Club from Saranac Central High School, who traveled to Washington, D.C., to greet our veterans at the World War II Memorial; you’re an awesome group of teens.

If you know a veteran of WWII, please let them know about the North Country Honor Flight.

It’s time they visit their memorial and get the recognition they greatly deserve for their sacrifices.

Exemption decision

TO THE EDITOR: For several months, the Plattsburgh City School Board has been considering the potential positive and negative consequences of offering a range of tax exemptions for military veterans.

As an objective measure of taxpayer opinions of this issue, the School Board conducted a survey on May 20.

Of the 709 people who participated in this survey, 61 percent supported the military veteran tax breaks at various levels (Press-Republican, May 30 and June 12).

The School Board voted 5 to 2 to approve the tax breaks (Press-Republican, June 20).

The series of Press-Republican articles indicates that most board members were willing to give this issue thoughtful and careful consideration, using the best data available.

However, it appears that at least one board member based his “no” vote on the opinion of two close relatives (Press-Republican, June 20). How preposterous is that?

Members of the School Board who ignore survey results and other objective data and form judgments on issues based on opinions and needs of family members should either resign or at least be reprimanded by district officials.
