TO THE EDITOR: We are all aware of the word “bullied,” but most of are not aware that being bullied not only applies to schools; it can also happen in the workplace.
Unfortunately, it is not a well-known fact. But 30 million people have reported to be a victim of workplace bullying.
The typical and most common type are the ones that are arrogant, habitually hypercritical and controlling. Most workplace bullies have an intense desire to control others. This is due to a self-centered drive to gain power and financial and career success.
Ultimately, the bullies find personal fulfillment in belittling and degrading others to make themselves feel better. The bullies’ ambition is in their constant strive to make themselves look good to management while the whole time pointing out even the frivolous flaws of their peers to make themselves look better.
The boss is usually not aware of the actions of the bullies and find them to be an asset to the organization and often promote them.
The victim of the bully usually is very anxious and feels intimated when the bully is around; they often suffer from insomnia and literally feel like throwing up before work. They feel powerless against the bully, and when the time does come to confront the bully either in person or through other channels such as filing a complaint against them, the victim is all to well aware that his/her career can be jeopardized.
I know this all too well. This happened to me, and it can happen to you.
