TO THE EDITOR: The first North Country Jr. Iron Chef competition was a great success.
This cooking competition for middle and high school student teams is a project of the Health Initiative. Each team offered a healthy, delicious dish with local and commodity ingredients that could be realistically prepared in a school cafeteria.
Teams came from around the North Country: Bacon Boys, Brasher Falls; Black Ice, Plattsburgh; Canton Bears, Canton; Canton Golden Chefs, Canton; Cooking Zebras, Brasher Falls; DeKalb Dominators, Hermon-DeKalb; Future Chefs, No. Franklin Educational Center; Healthy in Heuvelton, Heuvelton; Healthy Panthers, Brushton-Moira; Panther Pride Chefs, Brushton-Moira; Peru Blue, Peru; Seaway Tech, Seaway Technical Center; Seaway Tracker, Seaway Technical Center; Stone Cold Chefs, Potsdam; Top Cats, No. Adirondack Central School; The Miss Fitz, Malone; and Treble Chefs, Massena.
Two expert panels judged the dishes: Addie J. Russell, assemblywoman; Artie Frego, food service director, St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES; Autumn Crabtree, student, Little River Community School; Brian Walker, chef and proprieter, 1844 House; Ellie Siegfried, student, Little River Community School; Jean Rowe, Health Initiative Board member, United Helpers Management Company; John Kordet, Parsley Place Herbs; Julie Holbrook, food service director, Keene Central School; Kyle Mayette, executive chef, Clarkson University; Lauren French, superintendent, Gouverneur Central School; Megan Kent, Kent Family Growers; and Susan Shene, superintendent, Clifton-Fine Central School.

TO THE EDITOR: “There is no one that wants to get to the bottom of this more than I do.”
When you hear our president utter this statement, you can rest assured that we will not get an answer to our question. He has made this statement about Fast and Furious, the release of top-secret details involved in the killing of Bin Laden and the Benghazi attack.
Were the Fast and Furious gun sales an effort to make the public see that we had to increase gun controls, as some people think? Did the White House staff leak the top-secret detail of killing Bin Laden to enhance the president’s image? The president left our people in Benghazi to die and then tried to make us believe that it was caused by a spontaneous uprising and that everything possible had been done to save them.
We cannot believe this administration. While taking our country to financial disaster, we are told that the deficit is not a problem.
When the Federal Reserve quits printing money (issuing credit to banks) to buy U.S. bonds and the interest rates rises to 6 percent from the current 2.2 percent, it will cost us more than $1 trillion a year in interest, and our dollar will be worthless.
