Cheers and Jeers: March 31, 2014

CHEERS to Amy Bonn for all the work she did to originate the month-long series of children’s activities known as Snowball and for continuing to be intricately involved.

Bonn, who works at Champlain Valley Transportation Museum, is a mother of two young children who took it upon herself, two years ago, to create the Kids Corridor Coalition of the North Country.

The coalition, under her guidance, wanted families to have a winter opportunity for free or low-cost events for kids. The idea was to offer programs that would promote physical activity, good health and learning during the “cabin fever” month of February. From that effort evolved the Snowball series of events.

People who have been involved from the start have told the Press-Republican that the committee wouldn’t have been created without Bonn’s efforts. And she has maintained a strong presence in Snowball as numerous other local institutions and organizations have joined the effort.

It’s now a multi-agency extravaganza. The major sponsors are Champlain Valley Transportation Museum, Clinton County Youth Bureau, Mountain Lake PBS, Town of Plattsburgh Parks and Recreation Department, SUNY Plattsburgh Physics Club, Journey into Reading, North Country Cultural Center for the Arts, Plattsburgh YMCA and the Child-Care Coordinating Council of the North Country. Other contributors are Champlain Centre, Clinton County Historical Association, City of Plattsburgh Recreation Department, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Clinton County, Cornerstone Bookstore, Foundation of CVPH Medical Center, Imaginarium Children’s Museum, Lumber Jills, Kids Station at Champlain Valley Transportation Museum, Kent-Delord House Museum, Olive Ridley’s, Plattsburgh Public Library, Plattsburgh YMCA, Plattsburgh State Art Museum, SUNY Plattsburgh English Department, RSVP of Clinton County and Sunrise Rotary.

Bonn continues as Snowball coordinator, making sure the many events are scheduled properly and run smoothly. The agencies provide the substance that makes up Snowball, but it is Bonn who packs it all together.
