Rotary Day

TO THE EDITOR: As president of Plattsburgh Sunrise Rotary Club, I would like to recognize International Rotary Day.

It was 109 years ago on Feb. 23, 1905, the first ever Rotary meeting was held in Chicago; from there, it grew into the international service organization we know it as today.

In our region, we have two clubs in Plattsburgh, one in Rouses Point and one in AuSable Forks, not to mention several clubs that service Essex and Franklin counties.

Our club sponsors several local activities, the most recent being the Winter Carnival, which was just presented a Spirit Award by Sen. Betty Little.

Our biggest event and fundraiser is the Mayor’s Cup Festival, sponsored jointly by Sunrise Rotary and the City of Plattsburgh.

With the monies raised, we are able to help fund many community organizations that provide for education, literacy, scouting, housing and mental health. Throughout the year, we also assist with a local soup kitchen arid provide the community food shelf with our member donations.

The generosity of the North Country is especially evident with their involvement in two organizations that we assist monetarily: the Jamaica Mission and the Mission of Hope.

George and Harriet Burrell and Sister Debbie Blow have created organizations that have had a tremendous impact on the impoverished people of Jamaica and Nicaragua, and our club is proud to be a part of their efforts.

Donations they receive throughout the region are tremendous and mirror what we have found in our activities — that the people of the North Country are second to none when it comes to generosity.

We are proud of both the local and international service that we provide and the spirit of fun in which we operate.
