In My Opinion: Support gave boost to broadcasting

As many of you know, this is my 40th and final year of broadcasting Plattsburgh State Cardinal Hockey.

It’s been quite a run!

I’ve broadcast games for every Plattsburgh State hockey coach, from John Corker through Bob Emery.

I’ve broadcast the exploits of just about every player to wear the red and white from A-Z.

In the more than 1,000 games were Prime Link, ECAC-West, SUNYAC and NCAA championships — I’ve seen and broadcast them all.

I think my favorite championship memory is the 2001 NCAA Championship at Rochester Institute of Technology.

It wasn’t just because RIT was undefeated going into the game, had beaten Plattsburgh decidedly 8-2 earlier in the year and was on their home ice, but because I had suffered a stroke in 2000 and wasn’t even sure I’d be able to broadcast games ever again. With the assistance of speech therapists from both the Clinton County Health Department and Plattsburgh State, I was able to recover my ability to speak again.

I also need to thank Coach Bob Emery, who had assistant Steve Moffat drop off some videotapes of games, at my home, so that I could practice. So the 2001 NCAA Championship was special to Plattsburgh State, as well as to me.

These last 40 years have gone by in the speed of a Brendon Hodge slap shot. There are so many, many folks to thank and too many to mention, individually by name.

Thank yous include coaches, assistant coaches, players, athletic directors, sport information directors, along with their assistants, trainers, student managers, rink managers and personnel.

I also need to thank my broadcast partners along the way, including John Mayette, Brad Ott and my current partner for the last dozen years, Rob Knowles. You all have made me a better hockey announcer.
