Speakout: Nov. 25, 2009

SPEAKOUT RULES

Speakout entries that are more than 100 words long will be rejected. Also, don't type all in capital letters and don't insult a specific person or use hateful language because those will be rejected also.

Please take a minute to proofread and spellcheck your entry before you send it. Look for spelling errors, grammar mistakes and words that should be capitalized but aren't.

It takes time to correct the many errors that arrive in Speakout entries, so it's a big help if you check them over first.

Thanks
For Thanksgiving, let every man, woman and child be free of anxiety, illness, addiction, neglect or other abuse; may no one go to bed hungry, or live in squalor at the hand of another. For those of us who are fortunate enough to live without these challenges everyday, may each and every one of us share what we have so the others may feel the warmth of the holiday season.

Symptoms
Many states, except New York, prescribe Tamiflu or Relenza for only those admitted to the hospital with the known H1N1 virus. Not New York docs ... they give it to everyone. The side effects are wicked and, coupled with the flu symptoms, make you want to crawl under the carpet for a few days. They have no long-term studies about what Tamiflu really does.

Fathers
Fathers are calling for equally shared parenting. Starting to be practiced by a growing number of couples. It stands in sharp contrast to the traditional marriage with children, in which the man works and the woman stays home. Equally shared parenting is more than an extension of feminism; it is more than simply what is fair. Equally sharing the care of your children with your co-partner is about balancing your life, balancing your family's collective life and sharing equally in the joys of raising paternal and maternal children.

Plates
I would not mind paying $25 for a license plate if it was to help our farmers. I would not mind if it was to help rebuild Crown Point Bridge. But if it is to pay for senators who won't do their jobs or for $100,000-a-year people that he promoted to positions for his own political gain, then I think we should protest and not stop protesting until it's off the table. My car registration, insurance, inspection, repairs and gas all went up. Much of it from taxes and fees imposed by the government.

Costs
My registration went from $16 to $45. Gas went up 20 cents in two weeks. Car insurance, inspections and repairs have all gone up. I have all I can do to afford the repairs that I need to have done. I don't need a new license plate. It's unfair to those of us who live in the country. We can't take a bus to work or a taxi (it's $30 each way here) or a train. If this keeps up, it will be cheaper to park my car than go to work.

Students
Why is it that when students voice their opinions, teachers tell them they have no right to say what they said. You teach in U.S. Gov't and U.S. History that everyone has the right to our own opinion as long as it doesn't infringe on others. But when they do speak up about something, students are told to shut up. Teachers should practice and follow what they teach all the students and what they were taught.

River Road
Here in Peru we have a road named River Road. I think we should change it to Barnyard Drive because it is covered with mud and manure — and to leave no doubt even the odor to go with it.

Coach
Coach Michelle B., thanks for making soccer season so fun for our daughter. Your constant encouragement, smile and laughter made learning the game fun for her. You never yelled at the children when they made mistakes. You just smiled and showed them the right way to do something. We wish that there were more town coaches that followed your example. You made it fun for the parents, too. We laughed and cheered with you at all the little mistakes and great goals. I wish your Dad could have watched you coach. He would have been so proud of you!

Town Hall
I'm glad that the Town of Dannemora is getting ready to put up a new Town Hall. The parking outside the current building is terrible, with few to no spots ever free. I went to renew my dog license a couple weeks ago and had to park at Maggy's since there was no place to park. I also will be able to occasionally attend board meetings. Since I have trouble walking stairs, I am currently not able to attend meetings. I do hope money is being kept in check as we taxpayers cannot afford to pay higher taxes.

Applebee's
From the bottom of my heart, and I am sure all veterans, thanks to Applebee's for the meals served to veterans free of charge by them on Veterans Day. Our hats go off to Applebees. Other restaurants could learn a lot from this message. And the entrees were excellent.

Big Tupper
Just saw the Big Tupper picture on the front page of Friday's Press-Republican. Is that rusty chairlift next to the dilapidated shack the one they're reopening this winter at Big Tupper? This is going to revitalize Tupper Lake? Seriously? It looks like a lawsuit waiting to happen. At least if the cable goes, it looks like the fall will only be about 18 inches or so.
