Speakout: May 24, 2009

DELAYS

Haven't seen your Speakout? There are a few possible reasons.

We won't publish Speakouts that are longer than 100 words or that we consider libelous or inappropriate, including personal attacks, merchant complaints that we can't verify and court matters.

Also, once a topic seems to have run its course, we will cut those for a time. The point has been made, and writers are always welcome to send a signed letter to the editor of no more than 300 words for publication on the Editorial page.

Lastly, if you haven't seen your Speakout yet, you might just need a little patience. It has proven hugely popular, and most days, we have hundreds of inches waiting to get in. News articles have priority, but we try to get in a little Speakout each day.

If you have any questions, call News Editor Lois Clermont at 565-4131.

Drunken driving
People who drive drunk and take someone's life while driving drunk deserve the same sentence or, at the minimum, life in prison. No more slaps on the wrists or reduced sentences. Killing someone with your car while drunk is the same as killing someone with a gun, period.

Comments
A big thank-you to the Press-Republican for adding the ability to comment on stories on the Press-Republican Web site. A good online news site gives its readers the ability to interact with each other and share opinions on the news stories of importance. Although the Press-Republican has a long way to go to offer that feature to their online readers (a forum), noticeable steps made in that direction are certainly appreciated.

Graduation
What a shame that Plattsburgh State students who have worked so hard won't be able to walk at their December 2009 commencement. Students have worked very hard for their degrees, and it doesn't seem like the administration has taken into account students who live overseas or outside of New York state. Making students come back in May 2010 to walk in another graduation isn't fair. This announcement should have been sooner, not the day before the spring 2009 commencement. I can understand the budget issues, but this shouldn't go into effect until the year after students were notified. Shame on SUNY Plattsburgh.

Impeach
Is this also Bush's fault? Politicians are disarming the country, cutting port security along with border "anti fence, terrorist loving" mentality. In the words of Rahm, don't waste a good crisis. When the terrorists attack, this will free up another trillion or so for bogus programs. It may even qualify for a great crisis, then politicians can really get creative with spend and tax. If you voice opposition you will be labeled. Going broke? Look at Cali, New York is next. This is where the country is heading. It's Change! Impeach the Pied Piper before it's too late.

Transparency
Isn't it ironic that nowadays when the solution to almost every problem in Washington DC is more transparency, that Gov. Paterson decides to veto a bill that would have enforced NY state's Open Meetings law? The measure passed the Assembly 142-1 and by voice vote in the Senate. In his veto message, Paterson said the bill was opposed by all major groups representing local governments. I guess transparency is good at the federal level, but not at the local level.

Roads
The roads in Port Kent are in really grave need of repair since the water lines are being put in and some of the streets are worse than they were before. I took a ride down there and thought my front end was going to fall out of my car. Hopefully this issue will be repaired soon, because it is nice down there this time of the year and there are many people that go there just for a ride or golf and things like that.
