Essex County plans to appoint a new coroner soon

ELIZABETHTOWN — The Essex County Board of Supervisors plans to fill by appointment a sudden vacancy for an Essex County coroner position.

Longtime coroner Walter Robert Huestis of Willsboro, one of four elected to serve in the post, died earlier this month.

Willsboro Supervisor Edward Hatch said his sympathy goes out to Heustis’s family.

“Bob Huestis has been a longtime servant of the Town of Willsboro and also Essex County. He will be truly missed.”

Huestis had owned the Huestis Funeral Home on Maple Street in Willsboro since about 1972.

“He was well liked,” Hatch said. “He grew up in Ticonderoga. His hobby was studying history, and he collected antique guns.”

His wife, Nancy Huestis, is a member of the Willsboro Town Council, and the couple has three children.

The county wants applicants seeking appointment as coroner to send a letter of interest and a resume to Randy Douglas, Chairman, Board of Supervisors, Care of Clerk of the Board Deb Palmer, 7551 Court St., Elizabethtown, NY 12932, no later than Oct. 31.

Douglas will appoint an interview committee to go over the letters/resumes received and make a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors.

The other coroners are Walter “Smitty” Marvin III of Elizabethtown, Kelli Valentine of Moriah and Paul Connery of Ticonderoga. They are part-time county officials who receive about $4,000 a year.

They are called to unattended deaths, fatalities and other death-related circumstances. Coroners have authority to order autopsies and certify individuals as deceased.

The deadline to get on the Nov. 6 General Election ballot has passed, so the appointee will serve until elections next year.
