Democratic primary set

MALONE — Registered Democrats in Malone Election Districts 1 through 7 will vote in a primary next month to choose a party candidate for Franklin County Legislature.

Malone physician Dr. Carl Sherwin and County Industrial Development Agency Vice Chair Paul Hogan are running against each other on Tuesday, Sept. 10, for the chance to face incumbent Republican Marc “Tim” Lashomb of Malone for the District 4 seat in the November election.

Only those enrolled in the Democratic Party in Malone are eligible to vote in the primary, the only one to be held in Franklin County this year.

Polls will be open that day from noon until 9 p.m. at the Cedar Commons Plaza, 3372 Route 11.

Those who are not registered but want to vote in the primary and general election on Nov. 5 must register with the County Board of Elections by Friday, Aug. 16.

District 4 will not be the only contested County Legislature race this year.

Incumbent Gordon Crossman (D-Malone) is challenged by Republican Mark Besio in District 3.

Incumbent Sue Robideau (R-Brushton) is challenged in District 5 by Democrat Don Dabiew of Bombay.

In District 7, Democrat Barbara Rice of Saranac Lake, Republican Edwin Randig of Saranac Lake and Independent Curtis Reynolds of Lake Clear are all vying for the seat left vacant when Timothy Burpoe (D-Saranac Lake) opted not to seek re-election.

Incumbent District 1 Legislator Guy “Tim” Smith of Fort Covington, incumbent District 6 Republican Paul Maroun of Tupper Lake and incumbent District 2 Democrat Billy Jones of Chateaugay are all running unopposed for another three-year term each.

The other county race is for county clerk, between Kip Cassavaw and Cindy Gale.

Incumbent District Attorney Derek Champagne, incumbent County Treasurer Bryon Varin and incumbent County Coroners Martin Hughes III and Bert Wilcox are all running unopposed for re-election.

For more information on how to register to vote, call the Board of Elections at 481-1664.
