Four seek seats on Saranac Lake School Board

2 incumbents, 2 challengers in race

SARANAC LAKE — Four candidates are running for two seats on Saranac Lake School Board.

Incumbents Terry Tubridy and Lisa Paschke seek re-election, with Kelly Morgan-Duprey and Aurora White also vying for positions.

The budget vote and School Board election is set for Tuesday, May 20. Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Saranac Lake High School.

Here are the candidates' responses to questions posed by the Press-Republican:

What do you most hope to accomplish in the coming term on the School Board?

Morgan-Duprey: "I am interested in keeping costs down by expanding on shared services with other districts but also maintaining our valued employees.

"I would also like to explore possible grants that may be available.

"I have been employed at St. Joseph’s for over 20 years. I feel that my management experience working with budgets and supervising staff will enable me to be a contributing member of the School Board."

Paschke: "My goals for the next three years would be to keep our spending under control in these fiscally stressful years while still offering a good, solid education for the children of our district.

Tubridy: "I’m looking at trying to end the Gap Elimination Adjustment. As far as I’m concerned, it violates the fiscal equity court ruling made in the state several years ago that found New York is not funding schools properly. The Saranac Lake School District lost $5 million in state aid over the last five years. And I think the GEA is illegal.

"We also have to strengthen curriculum to support all students. Based on the status of the district with the loss of enrollment, we need to revamp our high school curriculum to find a better way to prepare those who are not going to college.
