Rouses Point incumbents won't run

PLATTSBURGH — Village of Rouses Point incumbents will not be on the ballot when voters go to the polls March 19.

Trustees Brian Jefferson and Becky Reid’s two-year terms end at the beginning of April; seeking to fill them are Arvil “Junior” Moore, who served as trustee previously, and Joe Treadwell, who sits on the village’s Zoning Board of Appeals.

As well, longtime Village Justice John LaBonte will not seek re-election; attorney Michael Phillips has thrown his hat in the ring for that four-year position.

He, Moore and Treadwell were the only candidates to file petitions with the Village Office by the deadline earlier this week, so unless there are write-in candidates, they will run unopposed.

In the Village of Champlain, incumbent Mayor Greg Martin is seeking another term, as is Trustee Kim Trombley.

Trustee Tom Gurzenda did not file to seek another term; Janet McFetridge, a teacher at Northeastern Clinton Central School, is running unopposed for that seat.

Both mayor and trustees serve two-year terms in office in the village.

The election comes as the Champlain Village Board investigates the ins and outs of dissolution, as voters on March 19 will also decide whether their local government should be extinguished, with the Town of Champlain absorbing governmental oversight.

Incumbent Village of Dannemora Trustees Richard Scholl and Eric Jarvis are seeking four more years on the job, Village Treasurer Donna Taylor said.

Incumbent Justice Daniel Lucia is running for another four-year term.

The Village of Rouses Point will hold voter registration from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Village Office on Lake Street, Deputy Clerk Carol Hanfield said.

The villages of Champlain and Dannemora have eliminated their voter registration days.

“We did away with the separate registration date because no one came,” Taylor said.
