Rivers squeaks by in Rouses Point mayoral race

SARANAC LAKE — Saranac Lake voters re-elected Democratic Mayor Clyde Rabideau to a second four-year term Tuesday.

He won with 390 votes over Republican Dianna Trummer, a political newcomer, who garnered 141 votes.

“I want to thank the voters of Saranac Lake,” Rabideau said after the unofficial tally, including absentee votes. “I’m very honored to be their mayor again.

“And I want to compliment my opponent, Dianna Trummer. It takes a lot of courage to put one’s name out for public office.”

“It is wonderful to think that many people believe in me,” Trummer said Tuesday night.

“For the first time out, I thought it was very good. I’m disappointed, of course. But for a first time out, it was very humbling to have that many votes.

“It was low voter turnout,” she observed. “I’m going to assume that has to do with lack of interest. Somehow, we have to figure out how to cultivate the caring.”

Trummer said she wouldn’t “be long gone or forgotten” and will remain involved in the political mix.

“This is where I live; I grew up here. It’s an awful thing when so many are struggling and the argument is, ‘I can’t afford to live here any more.’ It’s a nice place to live.”

In the trustee race, the two incumbents, Democrat Tom Catillaz and Conservative Elias “Allie” Pelletieri bested Republican Garry Hoffman in a three-way race for two open seats.

There was a historically low voter turnout for this election; only 435 or so people had come to the polls by about 7 p.m., as Rabideau kept updates in the public eye via social media.

Saranac Lake has more than 2,600 registered voters.

George Rivers will again wear the mayor’s hat in Rouses Point.
