Burpoe won't seek another term

SARANAC LAKE — Longtime Legislator Timothy Burpoe is not running for another term on the Franklin County Legislature.

He called a news conference Friday on the steps of the Harrietstown Town Hall to not only make that announcement but also to endorse a woman who is running to take his place.

BUSINESSWOMAN TO RUN

Barbara Rice, part owner of the long-held family business Rice Furniture in downtown Saranac Lake, said she gave the idea a lot of thought and feels she has the qualifications to represent the towns of Harrietstown and Franklin.

The Democrat said her business experience, “fiscal prudence,” knowledge of the county and her constituency and willingness to “work cooperatively to reach a consensus” would be an asset to the legislature.

Rice said she will be familiarizing herself more with county issues as the November election gets closer and thanked Burpoe for his years of service and rousing support.

SERVED 9 YEARS

Burpoe said he is “a term-limit guy,” who felt the three terms he served as a legislator were enough.

“Nine years is a long time to serve and continue to have the same energy and fresh perspective that makes a legislator effective,” he said.

Becoming involved in issues can take away a certain distance a legislators should have, “so sometimes you need a fresh face and a fresh look,” Burpoe said.

He said he has enjoyed serving the county and reserves the right to run again if he doesn’t like the way things operate after his departure at the end of the year.

The Saranac Lake Democrat, who represents District 7, said his legacy as a legislator will be up to others to decide but added, “All I can say is that I did my best. I tried to be a clear and fair voice for all the people of the county.”
