Commission seeks input on utilities’ storm response

LAKE PLACID — The Moreland Commission on Utility Storm Preparation and Response is holding a hearing to solicit public comment on how energy utilities responded to recent storm damage.

Set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the Olympic Regional Development Authority’s second-floor Edelweiss Room at 2634 Main St. in Lake Placid, it will be the seventh in a series of public hearings around the state.

The hearings focus on the emergency preparedness and response of utilities to recent storms and recommendations for restructuring the oversight of energy utilities in New York to improve the reliable and affordable transmission of power.

On the latter point, the commission specifically seeks comments from contributors who can provide guidance and insight into overlapping services provided by the Public Service Commission and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority that impact residents and businesses.

Members of the public will be able to register to speak and are asked to keep their remarks to no more than three minutes to allow as many as possible to share their views.

The public may also submit written comments before or after the hearings via email: comments@moreland.ny.gov.

LAKE PLACID — SnowEast Magazine has opened the nomination period for its annual Reader’s Survey.

Categories range from Most Scenic to the Best Ski Resort in the East. Last year’s survey generated more than 6,800 votes from the magazine’s readership.

Last winter, Whiteface/Lake Placid won the honor as the East’s Destination Village. The publication’s readers also tabbed Whiteface/Lake Placid as New York State’s Favorite Ski Resort and the East’s Most Scenic Resort.

The Whiteface/Lake Placid region earned accolades from another publication recently. In October, SKI Magazine readers tabbed it as the No. 1 Destination for Off-Hill Activities for the 20th year in a row. Readers also gave Whiteface, Wilmington and Lake Placid high marks for its scenery, resort dining and après ski, all ranked at No. 3; and challenging terrain (#7) and mountain character (#8).
