---- — Heart-disease fundraiser day coming up Friday

PLATTSBURGH — Many people in the community will be wearing red on Friday, Feb. 1, to raise awareness and funds to fight the No. 1 killer of women, cardiovascular disease.

The campaign is part of the American Heart Association’s 10th-annual Wear Red Day, in which participants wear red, donate $5 to join the Go Red For Women movement and receive a red-dress pin.

For 10 years, Go Red For Women has been educating and connecting hundreds of thousands of women with knowledge and tools to help women make lifesaving choices. More than 627,000 women’s lives have been saved, and 330 fewer women are dying per day. But the fight is far from over.

“Now is the time to act. Heart disease is still the number one killer of women, and ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease,” Anne Buckley, survivor speaker for the Plattsburgh Go Red For Women Dinner, which is also being held on Feb. 1 at the Westside Ballroom, said in a news release. “With the right information, education and care, heart disease in women can be treated, prevented, and even ended. “
