National Day of Prayer service set

PLATTSBURGH — CVPH Medical Center’s Spiritual Care Department is celebrating the National Day of Prayer with a prayer service at noon Thursday, May 2.

The nonpartisan, interfaith event will be held outside the hospital’s front entrance. The rain location is the Foundation Boardroom.

All are invited to gather to pray for area schools, the economy and the world.

This year’s national theme, “Pray for America,” is based on Matthew 12:21, which says “In His name the nations will put their hope.”

Church hosts Earth Care Coffee House

SARANAC LAKE — The First Presbyterian Church of Saranac Lake will host an Earth Care Coffee House from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday in the Great Hall of the church at 57 Church St.

The community is invited to celebrate Earth Day with music, poetry, home-baked goods and discussion. The event will feature music by Invasive Species, Alex Smith, Duane Keith Gould and the Rustic Riders. Poet Alta Wamsganz will share the spoken word. The Coffee House will benefit Saranac Lake’s Common Ground Community Garden. There is no cover charge, but a freewill donation will help with scholarships for local gardeners. Common Ground’s Ellen Beberman will be on hand to share information and reflections on community gardening in the Adirondacks.

The First Presbyterian Church is among the first 100 churches nationally to be certified as an Earth Care Congregation. The award acknowledges the church’s environmental stewardship achievements in worship, education, facilities and outreach to the community. The church partners with the Common Ground Community Garden to grow organic produce for the Saranac Lake Interfaith Food Pantry.
