Area teen completes program under orchestra

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Kelly Cantwell, a junior at Plattsburgh High School, recently completed a four-week residence orchestral studies program at Skidmore College.

During the program, students work one-on-one with professional musicians from the Philadelphia Orchestra and have several performances in the Albany and Saratoga area under the orchestra’s direction. The program concluded with a performance at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Selection into the program is very competitive. High-school students throughout New York state are considered by nomination from their high-school music instructor and after auditioning before the senior members of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Cantwell, one of 115 students selected, was nominated after receiving a perfect score in her New York State School Music Association level VI percussion evaluation. She then auditioned for the percussion instruments and has favored the timpani while performing with the orchestra.

The program is sponsored by the New York State Summer School of the Arts Program, the New York State School Music Association, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, the Philadelphia Orchestra Association and the New York State Education Department.
