Health Notes: Sept. 18, 2012

Free screening available for hunters

ELIZABETHTOWN — The annual Hunters’ Health Screening is from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Elizabethtown Community Hospital.

Hunters can receive a basic health evaluation at no cost. Results will be reviewed by a physician that evening, and an opportunity for consultation will follow.

Information on hunting, hunting safety and regulations will be available in the lobby, as will a State Department of Environmental Conservation representative. Local authors, safety instructors and hunting experts will also share information.

AMC hosts diabetes education program

SARANAC LAKE — Adirondack Medical Center will offer its six-week comprehensive Diabetes Self Management Education Program starting on Wednesday, Sept. 19.

Taught by an interdisciplinary team of five physicians, a pharmacist, dietitian/certified diabetes educator, physical therapist and registered nurses, the group meets for six consecutive Wednesday evenings.

Included in the sessions is valuable information on nutrition, exercise, medications and prevention of acute and chronic complications. A physician referral is needed for insurance and Medicare or Medicaid coverage. Scholarships are available through the Adirondack Health Foundation.

BodySense open house is Saturday

PLATTSBURGH — Ilene Leshinsky, a licensed clinical social worker-R and founder of BodySense, is hosting an open house on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 159 Margaret St., Suite 300.

The theme is “Wake Up Your BodySense! Want Peace with Food, Eating and Your Body Image?” Two free sessions will be offered, one from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and another from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There is no obligation to continue the program.

During the open house, attendees will meet Leshinsky and see her office; learn about the BodySense group and individual programs; ask questions and get answers; enjoy light refreshments; and register for fall groups if they like.
