People urged to walk today for heart health

PLATTSBURGH — The American Heart Association is calling upon Plattsburgh residents to ditch their desks and lace up for their heart health today, which is National Walking Day.

On a day where hundreds of thousands across the nation take steps to improve their health, Americans are being encouraged to spend at least 30 minutes of their day briskly walking.

Physical activity is critical to being healthy, but fewer than 50 percent of adults get enough daily exercise, according to the Heart Association.

Adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week to see the health benefits of physical activity, such as lower blood pressure, improved bone health, weight maintenance after weight loss, better sleep and more energy.

The Heart Association encourages walking as the exercise of choice because it has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity.

Volunteers ready for Day of Caring on Saturday

PLATTSBURGH — On Saturday, April 5, volunteers across Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties will lend their hand to the annual Day of Caring event.

It is hosted by the United Way of the Adirondack Region Inc., North Country Regional Volunteer Center, Project HELP at SUNY Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau.

Local residents who are unable to volunteer are still able to participate in the day by donating food. Food drives are planned at Sam’s Club, Price Chopper, Yando’s Big M and Cumberland 12, all in Plattsburgh.

Students from Project HELP will be going door to door in the City of Plattsburgh collecting food.

In Lake Placid, Uihlein Living Center will be collecting food on April 4.

Catholic Charities in Malone is collecting food and senior hygiene products all week to help out the local seniors. The drop off site is at any local senior citizen center in Malone. All food items collected will go to the local food shelves.
