Volunteers needed to plant trees in Keene Valley

KEENE VALLEY— Volunteers are sought to plant trees along the East Branch of the Ausable River at Rivermede Farm in Keene Valley on Sunday.

The trees will be planted along the banks of a 2,800 foot streambank restoration project completed last summer in partnership with the Ausable River Association, Essex County Soil and Water Conservation District, Trout Unlimited and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

“The plantings will, over time, protect the restoration project, further stabilize the riverbanks, build the floodplain’s capacity to protect downstream infrastructure and improve wildlife habitat and fishing recreational opportunities,” a press release said.

Volunteers are asked to meet at Rivermede Farm, off Beede Lane in Keene Valley, at 12:30 p.m. The event will take place rain or shine, so volunteers should dress properly for weather conditions and wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots.

Also, bring work gloves, a shovel (if you have one), drinking water and snacks. Light refreshments will be provided in the afternoon. Supervised young people can also participate.

Boynton Avenue reconstruction to start Wednesday

PLATTSBURGH — The section of Boynton Avenue between North Catherine and Lynde streets in the City of Plattsburgh will undergo complete reconstruction.

The work will start Wednesday, and residents and other motorists are encouraged to take alternate routes.

There will be some water-service interruptions, officials said, but residents will be notified prior to the shutoff.

The project coincides with the present closure of the on-ramp off Boynton to Interstate 87 northbound; the city recommends taking Margaret Street/Route 9 out of the city and accessing the highway on the Exit 39 ramp at Cumberland Head Corners.

The Boynton Avenue work is expected to be completed in mid-July.
