Streets closed for Saranac Lake Daffest Derby this morning

SARANAC LAKE — Streets are closed to vehicle in Saranac Lake this morning as the Daffest Derby soapbox car races takes place.

Police shut down the following roads starting at 6 a.m.: Main Street from Lake to River streets and Lapan Highway from River Street to Canaras Avenue.

The flag starts the derby at 11 a.m.; streets will reopen when it is finished.

Clinton County to remove weight-limit signs Monday

PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Highway Department will remove all posted weight-limit signs from county roads on Monday.

Vehicles weighing more than 5 tons can resume using those roads on that date.

Fire companies welcome visitors

PLATTSBURGH — Nine local fire departments and a rescue outfit will open their doors to new recruits this weekend.

For the third annual RecruitNY, departments will give tours of their firehouses and fire apparatus, allow visitors to try on turnout gear and offer visitor activities.

Members will discuss the volunteer requirements and rewards that come with being a volunteer firefighter, as well as conduct demonstrations, answer questions and provide visitors with information about how to join.

Participants today and Sunday are: Champlain Volunteer Fire Department and Champlain EMS, 162 Elm St., Champlain, 298-5500; Champlain EMS, Mooers Station 1, 2508 Route 11, Mooers; South Plattsburgh Fire Department, 4105 Route 22, Plattsburgh, 593-8051; Crown Point Volunteer Fire Department, 2764 Main St., 597-3211; Moriah Volunteer Fire Department, 630 Tarbell Hill Road, Moriah, 546-7837; and Constable Volunteer Firemen,1136 State Route 122, Constable, 483-5908.

Departments holding open houses just today are: Keene Valley Volunteer Fire Department, 15 Market St., Keene Valley, 576-4727; Mineville-Witherbee Volunteer Fire Department, 112 Raymond Wright Ave., Mineville, 942-7126; Port Henry Volunteer Fire Department, 14 Church Street, Port Henry, 546-7771; and Schroon Lake Volunteer Fire Department, 28 Industrial Drive, Schroon Lake, 532-7747.
