Peru park closed for trail construction

PERU — Heyworth/Mason Park here is closed for construction of a hiking trail that has been a long time coming.

Town of Peru grant coordinator Adele Douglas said contractors from Steven Fuller Excavating are building the Little Ausable Trail, named for the river it crosses.

“It’s about a mile-and-a half-long trail that will connect Heyworth to Sullivan Park,” she said. “I’m looking forward to finally having it constructed.”

The trail has been part of a decade-long project that the Town of Peru has been planning, mapping and working out a budget for, she said.

“It is mostly funded through federal and state grants.”

The town’s contract with Steven Fuller is $800,000, and grant money is paying for about 80 percent of it, she said.

Workers have been clearing stumps, surveying the area and putting up a silt fence aimed to control silt and sediment and protect the outside area from contamination.

Douglas said the project would most likely continue until the fall, but that all depends on everything going as planned and on schedule.
