Saranac School Board sets budget hearing

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Central School Board will hold a public budget hearing at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, in the Middle/High School auditorium.

The 2014-15 proposed budget totals $31,725,416. Find out more at www.saranac.org.

The Saranac School Board encourages the public to attend.

The regular board meeting will immediately follow the budget presentation at the Middle School.

The budget vote is scheduled for noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, in the Middle School gymnasium.

District residents will also be electing two School Board members. Also, they will weigh in on a separate proposition to utilize revenues from the bus-purchase reserve fund to offset the cost of school buses and an increase in Dannemora Free Library appropriations, from $6,500 to $7,000.

Peru park closed for trail construction

PERU — Heyworth/Mason Park here is closed for construction of a hiking trail that has been a long time coming.

Town of Peru grant coordinator Adele Douglas said contractors from Steven Fuller Excavating are building the Little Ausable Trail, named for the river it crosses. 

“It’s about a mile-and-a half-long trail that will connect Heyworth to Sullivan Park,” she said. “I’m looking forward to finally having it constructed.”

The trail has been part of a decade-long project that the Town of Peru has been planning, mapping and working out a budget for, she said.

“It is mostly funded through federal and state grants.”

The town’s contract with Steven Fuller is $800,000, and grant money is paying for about 80 percent of it, she said.

Workers have been clearing stumps, surveying the area and putting up a silt fence aimed to control silt and sediment and protect the outside area from contamination.

Douglas said the project would most likely continue until the fall, but that all depends on everything going as planned and on schedule.
