Restored paintings return today

PLATTSBURGH — The portraits of Betsey Delord and her son-in-law Henry Livingston Webb will be officially returned for display in the Kent-Delord House Museum’s Blue Parlor on Thursday, April 24.

The two paintings have been absent since May 25, 2013, while undergoing needed restoration at the Williamstown Art Conservation Center in Massachusetts.

Experts at the center have removed years of accumulated grime and yellowed varnish that has revealed original colors, clothing details and background items. The before and after comparisons are drastic, a press release states.

Abraham Tuthill painted Betsey Delord’s portrait in 1818, but in 1835 Henry Livingston Webb had it modified by Henry Inman, who had painted his likeness. Since that year, people have wondered about what had the second painter covered. It is now known.

On display with the restored painting will be an x-radiograph of the 1818 painting. What has been hidden since 1835 will be revealed.

The Kent-Delord House Museum’s Board of Directors will host a reception celebrating the return from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Light refreshments will be available.

For more information, contact the Kent-Delord House Museum at 561-1035.
