Bluegrass for Next Generation Scholarship available

PLATTSBURGH — SUNY Plattsburgh is now accepting applications for the Bluegrass for the Next Generation Scholarship.

New for fall 2013, the scholarship is open to applicants who have successfully completed the introduction to bluegrass music class and taken lessons on a bluegrass instrument: banjo, mandolin, string bass, fiddle or guitar. Recipients will receive up to $1,250 for each of two years of study.

Last year, an anonymous donor gave the college a massive collection of bluegrass recordings and $34,000 with which to create the college’s Bluegrass for the Next Generation program. In addition to classes and lessons, a lunchtime bluegrass music hour on campus radio station WARP and the creation of a bluegrass ensemble that students can audition for, the program also provides bluegrass instruments to six area high schools.

According to project coordinator Dr. Stuart Voss, the Bluegrass for the Next Generation program was created to help keep this truly American art form alive. The hope is that the high school component will attract students to SUNY Plattsburgh as music majors and minors.

For more information on the scholarship, contact Dr. Karen Becker at 564-2477 or karen.becker@plattsburgh.edu.
