Teens to perform anti-bullying play tonight

LAKE PLACID — On Common Ground, a teen social theater troupe co-sponsored by the Substance Abuse Prevention Team of Essex County and Moriah Central School District, is performing its bullying and suicide prevention play, “A Change of Heart,” in Lake Placid at 8 tonight.

The performance at the Northern Tier Providers Coalition annual conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel is open to the public.

On Common Ground creates original drama to promote awareness of social issues relevant to teens.

Formed in 2010, the original cast members worked with a professional acting troupe in Syracuse and members of the Prevention Team to create their first production, about gambling issues, “I Don’t Have a Problem!”

This year, Essex County received a grant from Sen. Betty Little’s office to help address the issues of suicide and bullying. Some of the grant funds were used to send On Common Ground on a script-writing retreat to develop a new skit dealing with these issues.

As with the gambling skit, the students spent a great deal of time researching the issues to build their knowledge and develop complex, believable characters, according to a news release.

Each performance is followed by a question and answer session. The performers stay in character and respond to questions from their audience.

AVCS Board meeting scheduled for Nov. 13

CLINTONVILLE — The AuSable Valley Central School Board will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at the Middle School-High School auditorium in Clintonville. 

It is anticipated that the meeting will begin with presentations, followed by an executive session, with the regular session immediately following.

The agenda will include special-education recommendations and personnel issues.

Board meetings are open to the public.

PLATTSBURGH — Clinton Community College Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting at 7:30 a.m. today in the board room.
