National Guard holding convoy training today

SARANAC LAKE — The New York National Guard’s 1156th Engineer Company is conducting convoy training in the Saranac Lake area today, using the New York State Armory here as a base.

Local residents may see military convoys of 5- and 10-ton military dump trucks operating in the area this afternoon and Saturday. The soldiers will not be carrying weapons.

The company is based in Kingston and at the Camp Smith Training Site north of Peekskill.

The change of location allows the company’s 120 soldiers to train in a new area and also allows it to attend a bobsled race at the Mount Van Hoevenberg bobsled course, Capt. Daniel Colomb, the company commander, said in a press release.

The soldiers will conduct recruiting events at the course, he explained.

The convoy training will allow the combat engineers to hone their skills in driving the dump trucks they have recently been equipped with, tactical communications, vehicle-recovery operations and platoon-level planning and operations rehearsals, Colomb said.

The company’s headquarters elements will train on tracking subordinate-unit movements, preparing and issuing orders, and communications procedures.
