---- — Open house set for new Malone clinic

MALONE — An open house is set for Wednesday at the Community Health Center of the North Country clinic at 380 Creighton Road in the Malone Industrial Park.

The event, set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., includes a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tours of the new building.

The clinic, which is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, is accepting patients with no insurance, those who are under insured and those on Medicaid.

It was created with a grant through the Cerebral Palsy Association of the North Country and the State Office of Persons with Developmental Disabilities.

Heart Walk to step off Saturday

PLATTSBURGH — It is expected a crowd of some 1,500 will gather for the American Heart Association’s annual My Heart.My Life Heart Walk on Saturday on the U.S. Oval and at the Plattsburgh City Recreation Department.

The family-friendly event raises money and awareness to fight America’s No. 1 killer, heart disease.

Highlights include: different walk courses — a leisurely 1 mile or more challenging 3 miles; health screenings; Kids Zone; and healthy snacks.

Gavin Terry, age 6 months, will be honored as the 2012 Heart Hero. Moments after birth, he underwent surgery for a balloon stint to help correct critical pulmonary stenosis, a press release said. Now he is thriving and will be joined by his team of family and friends at the walk.

Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m., with a 10 a.m. start time.

Lauren Maloney of FOX44 and Tara Madison of Star 92.9 will be the emcees of the Heart Walk, which is sponsored nationally by Subway and Jenny Craig and locally by Schonbek/Swarvoski, Parker Chevrolet, Fujitsu, Mountain Valley Integrated Solutions, Community Bank, Chartwells, Transamerica.

Absentee ballots available at Franklin County Elections

MALONE — The Franklin County Board of Elections will be open extra hours for those wishing to obtain absentee ballots for the Nov. 6 election.

Absentee ballots are available during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and as follows: 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23, and Tuesday, Oct. 30; and 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 27, and Saturday, Nov. 3.

Potential voters are asked to use the Brewster Street entrance of the County Courthouse.

Scholarship Program open to high-school senior girls

The Distinguished Young Women of New York Scholarship Program is accepting applications through Nov. 1 for its college scholarship program, open to high-school senior women in New York state who are graduating by June 2013 with a 3.0 grade point average or higher.

The winner will be awarded the title of Distinguished Young Woman of New York and will go on to compete for the Distinguished Young Woman of America in Mobile, Ala., in June 2013 for additional scholarship money.

Both the New York and national scholarship programs, formerly America’s Junior Miss, have been providing scholarships for more than 50 years.
