Free kayak trip, hike planned

PERU — The Town of Plattsburgh Parks and Recreation Department will be offering a free kayak trip and tour of Valcour Island on Thursday, July 11.

The trip is open to all Town of Plattsburgh active adults and seniors. Kayakers will leave the Peru Boat Dock at 7:30 a.m. and paddle to Valcour Island, where attendees will take a short hike with Roger Harwood. Kayakers will return by noon.

All participants must preregister by visiting the Parks and Recreation Department at 151 Banker Road in Plattsburgh or by calling 562-6860. Prior kayaking experience is necessary. Space is limited.


Senior Council planning trip to D.C.

PLATTSBURGH — The Senior Citizens Council is offering a trip to the Washington, D.C., area from Friday, Oct. 18, to Tuesday, Oct. 22. 

The group will spend two full days touring Washington, D.C., sights and one day in Alexandria, Va. Sights to be visited include: the Washington National Cathedral, Ford’s Theatre and Petersen House, the National Air and Space Museum-Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Newseum, the International Spy Museum, and the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

In Washington, D.C., a guided Evening Illumination Tour of the National Monuments will be included as well as “time on your own” at the National Mall to explore the Smithsonian and other National Museums. In Alexandria, there will be a time of lunch and shopping in the historic Old Town, an afternoon guided tour of Alexandria and a visit to the Torpedo Factory Art Center. 

The tour includes coach transportation, four full breakfast buffets, four dinners, four nights of lodging, luggage handling and all admissions. A $250 deposit per person is required to secure a seat. The balance can be paid down at each person’s convenience, with the final payment due Friday, Sept. 6. The double-occupancy price is $770 per person. A $100 per person cancellation charge will apply if canceled within 42 days of the trip due to reservation guarantees at the hotel; refunds cannot be guaranteed at that time.
