ELIZABETHTOWN — Elizabethtown Community Hospital is a recipient of the 2013 IPRO Quality Award. The presentation was made at the organization’s annual meeting on June 4 in New York City.
The awards, given annually by IPRO, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization and Medicaid Review Agent for New York state, recognize organizations that demonstrate a high level of commitment to improving the quality of care provided to New York’s Medicare beneficiaries and Medicaid recipients.
The award was offered in recognition of ECH’s effort to continually improve the quality of its patient care and for its commitment to reporting quality data to the state and federal governments. The hospital exceeded reporting requirements for hospital inpatient and outpatient data.
“This is a significant honor for the hospital,” said CEO Rod Boula. “It is a testament to the hard work and exceptional effort by ECH staff members to improve patient care and clinical effectiveness while ensuring that patient satisfaction always exceeds expectations.”
ECH has instituted a number of programs that improve the patient experience and quality of care, including its “Quiet for Patients” campaign, aimed at reducing noise.
The campaign also features a series of posters that showcase staff members, reminding everyone about the importance of a quiet environment. Patients are given ear plugs upon arrival and there is also a dedicated phone line that patients can use if things are too loud.
Other efforts to increase patient satisfaction include dimming the lights each afternoon to encourage rest time and personalized notes from housekeeping staff that encourage patients and families to make specific requests so their stay will be more comfortable.
In addition, the ECH pharmacist meets with patients regularly so that pain is controlled and medication instructions are always clear. Nurses and nurse aides work as a team, assigned to particular patients so that communication is consistent. Each patient has a communication board designed to offer information about when nurses are scheduled to return, information about when to expect physical therapy and other activities.
AuSABLE FORKS — The Tahawus Center for Learning in Au Sable Forks has thanked its local partners for support for the activities planned for the TLC Discovery Program this summer. Support comes from Community Bank, Feeks Pharmacy, HoneyBee Community Fund, the Newton Family Fund, Stewarts Shops and the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature administered by the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts.
The facility is transforming a historic building into a new place of commerce and cultural and education activities.
This summer, area residents and visitors, youth to seniors, can explore a variety of activities including swing dance, ballet barre craft workshops, science labs and a new program “Leap into Listening.” Details on each offering are available on the TLC website www.TahawusCenter.org or by telephone: 646-734-7151. July 1-3, July 15-18 and Aug 5-15: Dance Classes include Gentle Ballet Barre, Swing Dance and early Childhood Creative Movement. Instructors are from Rebecca Kelly Ballet and Kids Co-Motion. Most classes are conducted for mixed ages and experience.
July 15-18: Science Lab Camp For Youth, 8-14 years, two mixed levels, mornings Monday through Thursday. Instructor Gary Dreiblatt, a teacher of 26-years, says the one-week camp is a place where “Young scientists use professional instruments and build their own equipment to discover the small, the large and the invisible worlds we inhabit.”
August 5-15: Leap-Into-Listening, two four-day sessions, Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., two groups, young readers and movers in first and second grades. A dynamic summer program that combines dance and literature-based activities to promote active listening and active play. Some scholarships are available.
August 5-15: ArtWorks Atelier, two four-day sessions, Monday through Thursday a.m, guided by artists, all ages youth to adult. Make your own projects in decoupage/collage, and/or Objets-Trouves Wind Chimes, 90-minute or three-hour sessions. Selected results will be displayed in the TLC Gallery starting Aug. 16. Also, The Windows Gallery has relocated to its new home on the second floor of the Tahawus Center during early summer. An opening event is planned for Friday, Sept. 6, with an exhibit of photographs by Jeri Wright of Wilmington.
PLATTSBURGH — Employees from Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Company’s Plattsburgh offices recently donated a Saturday of their time to The Strand Theater.
More than a dozen bank employees and family members helped clean the historic building during the “Day of Work” on June 8. The volunteers wiped down surfaces and cleaned bathrooms, windows and floors in preparation for a sold-out performance by “Quartetto Gelato.

The volunteer “Day of Work” is one of many ways Glens Falls National Bank supports nonprofits throughout its service area. The bank has 29 offices in Warren, Washington, Saratoga, Essex and Clinton counties, including Plattsburgh locations on Cornelia Street, Margaret Street and U.S. Avenue.
SCHROON LAKE — Rocky Acres Inn/B& B has received a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence award. The accolade, which honors hospitality excellence, is given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveler reviews on TripAdvisor and is extended to qualifying businesses worldwide. Only the top-performing 10 percent of businesses listed on TripAdvisor receive this award.
To qualify, businesses must maintain an overall rating of four or higher out of a possible five, as reviewed by travelers on TripAdvisor, and must have been listed on TripAdvisor for at least 12 months. Additional criteria include the volume of reviews received within the last 12 months.

PLATTSBURGH — Murnane Building Contractors has promoted Maria Martino to the position of controller for the company effective July 1.
Martino has been employed by Murnane since 1988, with primary responsibility for HR and payroll duties. She is a 1986 graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting.
Martino will be overseeing the company’s financial procedures.
Murnane Building Contractors is based in Plattsburgh and operates branch offices in Utica and Syracuse. Their construction revenues are in excess of $60 million annually and they employ more than 300 workers.
