American Red Cross offering babysitting training
MORRISONVILLE —The American Red Cross of the Northeastern New York Region is holding a daylong babysitters’ training course for youth ages 11 to 15 years.
The second-annual event is from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, at the North Country Chapter Office, 26 Emory St., Morrisonville.
Young people will learn how to care for infants and children, handle emergencies such as injuries and accidents, stay safe, recognize safety and hygiene issues, and communicate with parents. It also teaches lifelong entrepreneurial and career-development skills.
The course provides students with materials that are useful both in class and when they start babysitting, including a compact emergency-reference guide; an interactive CD-ROM featuring an activity booklet with games, songs, recipes and other activities; an electronic babysitting-client organizer; and more.

Writers’ workshop coming up in Chazy
CHAZY — The Chazy Public library is hosting a writers’ workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 12.
The workshop will be led by Susannah Risley, who has 17 years of experience in writing. Participants will learn to write memoirs or tell their family story.

Writing workshop next week in Mooers
MOOERS — The Mooers Free Library is hosting a two-session writing workshop that will focus on writing memoirs and family stories from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 8 and 9.
Susannah Risley will facilitate the workshop. In the first session, Risley will lead a discussion about writing a memoir and give examples of vivid language that makes experience come alive on the page. Participants will do a hands-on exercise to elicit memories and write what they have discovered. The next session will be a deeper exploration of writing.
The workshop is for anyone who has ever wanted to write for their own pleasure or to pass stories on as a family history. No experience is needed. Lowe’s hosting safety-seat check
PLATTSBURGH — Lowe’s Home Improvement at 39 Centre Drive is sponsoring a certified child-passenger safety-seat check from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.
Clinton County Traffic Safety, Morrisonville EMS and Safe Kids Adirondacks will be conducting the check.

YMCA offering hikes, overnight stay at Camp Jericho
PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh YMCA, 17 Oak St., will offer some Saturday hikes followed by an overnight at Camp Jericho.
The first hike will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Point Au Roche State Park for ages 8 to 11 years.The next hike will be on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Rattlesnake Mountain for ages 9 to 14 years. Following the hike, participants will go to Camp Jericho for pizza, smores, an overnight stay and breakfast in the morning.
Participants will meet in YMCA gym at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and will need to be picked up at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Attendees are asked to bring a few snacks in a backpack for the hike.
The cost is $20 for members, and $25 for non-members.
