LPCS Boardto meet tonight

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Central School Board will meet at 6 p.m. today in the Board of Education Conference Room, Administrative Services Center, 50 Cummings Road.

The session, to focus on the 2013-14 school budget, is open to the public.

Agenda items include a draft budget calendar, board goals and objectives, the contract-negotiation process, and, in executive session, discussion on the superintendent’s evaluation.

Family Weekendcoming up at PSU

PLATTSBURGH — SUNY Plattsburgh will welcome more than 600 parents and family members to its annual Family Weekend this Saturday and Sunday. 

Multiple events are scheduled both on- and off-campus.

Family Weekend offers “a great opportunity for families to get familiar with their student’s ‘home away from home,’” said Cori Jackson, director of the Center for Student Involvement, in a press release.

On-campus activities include musical performances in Angell College Center on Saturday night, featuring Mark Rust at the Coffeehouse in Burghy’s at 7 p.m. followed by the Gospel Choir in the Flynt Commons at 8:30 p.m.

Other activities include a trivia competition; ice-skating; dining; women’s and men’s soccer tournaments; a 3-mile Fun and Run Walk; and casual dining. Off-campus experiences include a trip to Burlington and a lakeside breakfast hosted by College President John Ettling.

Banned Books Read Out scheduled for Sept. 25

PLATTSBURGH — SUNY Plattsburgh’s Feinberg Library will host the second-annual Banned Books Read Out from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, in the Feinberg Library lobby.

The event features students, faculty and staff reading excerpts from selections of the top 100 banned or challenged books from 2000 to 2009.

Titles include “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” “Slaughterhouse-Five,” “Speak,” “Black Boy,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “The Kite Runner” and “In the Night Kitchen.”
