PSU students plan alternative spring break

PLATTSBURGH — This year’s alternative spring break will take students to communities as far away as Greensboro, Ga.

The yearly program offers a chance for students to engage in service opportunities with communities in need.

As students embark on the volunteer experience, they will learn to work with others, appreciate diversity and develop vital leadership skills, according to Cori Jackson, director of the Student Center for Involvement.

Alternative Spring Break is a sought-out experience for students.

“It opened my eyes to diversity and makes you appreciate what you have,” said Kelsey Darby, who will be participating in her third-annual trip this year. “It is definitely a life-changing experience.”

In addition to Greensboro, students will volunteer at sites in Bridgeport, Conn.; Mount Rogers, Va.; Bridgeton, N.J.; Georgetown, S.C.; and Pursglove, W.Va.

“It is an impactful experience for students because it begins a lifelong continuation of volunteer and community service,” Jackson said.

Students depart for their destinations Saturday, March 15. In order to make the program possible, they raise money by selling candy on campus and creating final-exam care packages.
