Climbing contest at The Crux today

WILLSBORO — The Crux will be hosting its fourth-annual indoor climbing competition Sunday, March 9.

The “Spring Thaw” is an all-ages indoor climbing competition, comprised of two major components: a Youth Division (11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and the Adult Divisions (3 p.m. to 5 p.m.) The Adult Divisions will be separated into Adult Open, Adult Advanced and Adult Masters (for ages 50 and older). All participants will receive prizes for competing, with awards going to the top three finishers in each division.

Registration fee for competitors is $15 for Youth Division and $30 for Adult Divisions.

Boating safety course coming up

PLATTSBURGH — The “About Boating Safely” course will be offered Tuesday, March 18, and Thursday, March 20, at the South Plattsburgh Fire Department.

The times for the course, offered by Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 15-8 of Plattsburgh, are from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Taking an “About Boating Safely” classroom course or one of the online boat safety courses adopted by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will satisfy New York state requirements for mandatory boater education.

About Boating Safely includes a wide variety of information, including general information about boats and maintenance; information on preparing for safe and enjoyable outings; navigation rules and aids to navigation; guidelines for operating your boat or PWC safely; what to do in case of boating emergencies; and regulations for New York and Vermont waters. In general, this information applies to all recreational watercraft, powerboats, PWCs or jet skis, sailboats, rowboats and kayaks.

This course satisfies the requirements for PWC operation and has been approved by the National Association of Boating Law Administrators.

There is a charge of $30 for the study booklet, certificate and wallet card.
