Health insurance open enrollment deadline approaches

QUEENSBURY — Individuals and families in New York state have through March 31 to enroll in a Qualified Health Plan (QHP) via NY State of Health: The Official Health Plan Marketplace. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), anyone who is not enrolled by 11:59 p.m. on that date may be subject to a penalty.

According to Adirondack Health Institute’s (AHI) Joyce Porter, enrollment assistance services and education department manager, AHI’s team of New York state-certified navigators are available for free, in-person, health insurance enrollment assistance.

Porter said in a press release that those eligible for Medicaid and Child Health Plus, those who qualify for catastrophic coverage and small-business owners may enroll in health insurance coverage year round. All other individuals who miss the March 31 deadline will have to wait for the next open enrollment period, which begins Nov. 15, to get health insurance coverage, unless they experience a qualifying event such as the loss of a job or the birth of a child. More information on qualifying events is available on the NY State of Health website at https://nystateofhealth.ny.gov.

Individuals needing assistance with enrollment can call AHI’s toll-free number (1-866-872-3740) to schedule an appointment with a navigator.
