2-way stop to become 4-way stop in Ticonderoga

TICONDEROGA — The intersection of Route 22 and Route 74/Montcalm Street in the Town of Ticonderoga was scheduled to change to a four-way stop today.

Previously, a flashing yellow warning signal controlled traffic moving north and south on Route 22.

The change, according to the State Department of Transportation, includes a flashing red light there and also stop signs to indicate that motorists must come to a full stop.

There is no change for traffic heading east and west on Montcalm Street and Route 74; those drivers already encounter full-stop signals.

“The change from a two-way stop is expected to improve safety at this intersection by making all motorists stop and look for other vehicles before traveling through the intersection,” DOT said in a press release.

Route 74 is also known as the Fort Ticonderoga Ferry Road, and several accidents have happened at that intersection.

The switch would be delayed should bad weather prevent it, but also planned were oversized “Stop” and “Stop ahead” signs on both the northbound and southbound approaches to the intersection to also alert motorists to the change.

Temporary electronic variable message signs were in place as the date for the change approached.
