— Kiwanis Club's senior picnic is Sunday
PLATTSBURGH -- The Kiwanis Senior Picnic will be held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Plattsburgh Elks Lodge, 56 Cumberland Ave.
The free event will be held rain or shine, with a picnic lunch and karaoke by Jim and Joan Fleury from 11 a.m. to noon and horse races and door prizes from noon to 2 p.m.
The picnic is hosted by the Plattsburgh Noon Kiwanis Club.
Agenda set for Common Council meeting
PLATTSBURGH -- The City of Plattsburgh Common Council will meet tonight at City Hall.
The meeting begins with a work session at 5 p.m. and the regular meeting at 6 p.m., both open to the public.
Included on the agenda are: request from Police Chief Desmond Racicot for a budget adjustment to recognize $100,000 from a state grant through Sen. Betty Little for a crime-scene-vehicle purchase; a request from the Municipal Lighting Department to write off unpaid bills for the period of Dec. 1, 2007, to Dec. 31, 2007 in the amount of $5,829; and a request from the city engineer to award Steven Fuller Excavating a contract for drainage improvements on the U.S. Oval for $188,188, with the city providing the asphalt.
Meet the Candidates Forum scheduled
PLATTSBURGH -- The Champlain Valley Business & Professional Women's Club will host the third-annual Meet the Candidates Forum at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Olive Ridley's restaurant on Court Street in Plattsburgh.
Champlain Valley BPW is giving candidates for office in Clinton County the opportunity to meet with local constituents, outline their platform for office and answer questions.
The forum will feature Assemblywoman Janet Duprey as the keynote speaker, in addition to a question-and-answer forum between Clinton County Family Court judge candidates Timothy Lawliss and William Meconi.
The forum, which will be moderated by Bob Grady, managing editor of the Press-Republican, will allow the audience to ask questions of the candidates.
Refreshments and a cash bar will be available.
The public is being encouraged to attend.
The club will not endorse or support a specific candidate.
The forum is open to any candidate for office in any township or city in Clinton County.

Public invited to sell produce at People's Park
DANNEMORA -- The Village of Dannemora is making available to any vendors interested the use of People's Park on Cook Street to sell fresh produce on weekends.
Anyone interested should call 492-7000 to register with the village as to when to set up, what products will be sold and a contact name and phone number.
Forum on taxation scheduled for Saturday
ELIZABETHTOWN -- The first-ever Lincoln Pond Association Civic Forum on "Building a Fair Tax System" will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Elizabethtown Town Hall.
Presentations by Frank Mauro, director of the Fiscal Policy Institute in Latham, and John Whiteley of the Tri-County Committee for Property Tax Relief in Ticonderoga are planned, with discussion to follow presentations.
"This is not about personal tax grievances," according to a release from organizers. "It's about the big picture and how we -- as a nation and as a region -- can put into place a tax system that is consistent with basic principles of economic justice and fiscal responsibility."
