Fire destroys Mooers home

MOOERS — Flames leveled a single-wide trailer here early Sunday.

Mooers Volunteer Fire Department responded to report of a blaze at 327 Letson Road at 5:21 a.m., according to Mooers Fire Chief Raymond Phair.

However, when crews arrived at the scene, nothing could be done to save the single-family home.

“When we got there, it was fully involved,” he said.

The family living in the trailer was not home, according to Phair, who believes they were in Albany at the time.

Though he did not know the names of the residents, he believes they were renting the home from the trailer’s owner, Amy Gilmore.

The fire went unnoticed for some time, Phair said, until a neighbor smelled smoke and alerted authorities.

Firefighters were at the scene for about two hours extinguishing flames, he noted, but the trailer burned to the ground.

The department’s auxiliary provided crew members with refreshments and Champlain Fire Department was on standby.

No one was injured in the incident, according to the chief, who was uncertain whether the home was insured.

State Police were summoned to the scene, he said, and the cause and origin of the blaze were under investigation Sunday afternoon.
