Police Log: Oct. 3, 2013 — Felony arrest

---- — PERU — Two people were charged with grand larceny and possession of stolen property Sept. 12 after they allegedly used a stolen credit card.

On June 30, a woman called State Police reporting she had lost her wallet after she placed it on her vehicle while at her residence on Middle Road in Willsboro and drove away without removing it first, State Police Troop B Public Information Officer Trooper Jennifer Fleishman said.

Travis J. Coonrod, 32, of Essex and Leslie A. VanValkenburg, 25, of Morrisonville came upon the wallet and took it with no intention of returning it to its owner, Fleishman said.

The pair later used a credit card from the wallet to make a $303 transaction at TD Bank on Main Street in Peru, she said.

The charge was flagged as suspicious by the woman’s credit card company and she reported the fraudulent charge to State Police, Fleishman said.

Coonrod and VanValkenburg were both charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony; fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony; petit larceny, a misdemeanor; and attempted petit larceny, a misdemeanor.

For the charges relating to the initial wallet theft, Coonrod was arraigned in Willsboro Town Court and released on his own recognizance, Fleishman said.

For the other charges, Coonrod was arraigned in Peru Town Court and sent to Clinton County Jail in lieu of $1,000 cash or $2,000 bond, she said.

VanValkenburg was issued an appearance ticket returnable to Willsboro Town Court.
