KEENE — The body of a missing Massachusetts man was found in the state forest off Round Pond Trail.
State Police reported Monday that the body of Scott W. Haworth, 46, of Chicopee was discovered by hikers about 4 p.m. Saturday.
An autopsy conducted Monday ruled the manner of death suicide.
“Hikers reported to New York State Police that they had located a body approximately four-tenths of a mile from the Round Pond Trail Head and 300 feet off the trail,” police said in a news release.
Troopers, working with Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers, responded and confirmed the body was at the location, police said.
Essex County Coroner Frank Whitelaw authorized its removal to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.
“An autopsy was conducted on today’s date by Dr. C. Francis Varga, who verified the remains as Haworth and determined the cause of death to be asphyxiation due to hanging,” police said Monday.
“The death has been ruled a suicide by the coroner.”
Haworth had been reported missing on Aug. 24 to the Chicopee Police, who contacted State Police here on Sept. 10. The man’s vehicle was found that day, parked at the Round Pond Trail Head.
An intensive search was launched of the Round Pond trail system in the densely forested Dix Mountain Wilderness.
The investigation confirmed Haworth had purchased items from Keene Valley Grocery on Sept. 5.
Troopers and forest rangers used canine teams and aviation crews to assist in the effort.
Police said Haworth was an avid hiker and frequently ventured into the wilderness alone.
