HARRIETSTOWN — Two woman were arrested Saturday for allegedly smuggling cigarettes.
Melissa L. Beddow, 39, of Broadalbin, N.Y., and Sandra Aponte, 46, of Gloversville, N.Y., stopped to provide police with information on a motorcycle accident on State Route 30, according to a State Police press release.
During the interview, police smelled marijuana coming from inside the vehicle they were traveling in, and subsequently found 10,000 untaxed and unstamped cigarettes inside the vehicle.
Beddow and Aponte were charged with a felony and a misdemeanor for transporting untaxed and unstamped cigarettes. Beddow was also charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.
Both women were released on appearance tickets.
