Canadian pleads guilty to drug smuggling

ALBANY — A Canadian man pled guilty Friday to one count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, according to a Department of Justice news release.

Joel Cunningham, 30, of Ottawa, Canada admitted to smuggling over 128 pounds of Ecstasy intended for redistribution in New York City into the United States.

On April 9, he loaded a sport utility vehicle with the substance and crossed through an unmanned border crossing in the Akwesasne Mohawk Reservation. Members of the Border Enforcement Security Task Force in Massena followed and later stopped him. Law enforcement officers searched his car, finding the Ecstasy and more than $140,000 in U.S. Currency hidden in compartments and duffel bags.

Cunningham faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and isÎ being detained pending his sentencing.
