Plattsburgh man charged with sexually abusing child

PLATTSBURGH — A Plattsburgh man was charged Thursday with sexually abusing a child.

James Chamberlain Jr., 38, had consistently subjected a now 12-year-old girl to sexual abuse for about three years, said Sgt. Bradley Kiroy of the Plattsburgh City Police Department’s Detective Division.

The abuse happened in the City of Plattsburgh and was reported by the girl’s parents, he said.

Chamberlain was charged with first-degree sexual abuse and second-degree course of sexual conduct against a child, both felonies.

He was also charged with six counts of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, as there are other children who may have witnessed the abuse, Kiroy said.

Chamberlain was arraigned Thursday night in Plattsburgh City Court and was brought to Clinton County Jail, where he was still incarcerated Friday in lieu of $20,000 cash or $40,000 bond, according to the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department.

He is due back in City Court at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 16.
