Bloomingdale woman used car in alleged assault

SARANAC LAKE — Police say a Bloomingdale woman smashed her car into the front door of an apartment deliberately, intending to harm someone inside.

With Julie A. (Phinney) Bova, 34, at the wheel at about 2:20 a.m. Sunday, the sport utility vehicle caused significant damage, including shattering first-floor bay windows of apartment 3B at 12 Bloomingdale Ave, authorities said.

Police said they found her on the ground beside the car.

“Several by-standers and police attempted to assist Bova, and she became very combative," Saranac Lake Village Police said in a news release.

"She was restrained and transported to the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake for medical treatment.”

The two people in the apartment at the time were not injured, Saranac Lake Police Chief Bruce Nason said on Monday.

“It appears she was upset with an individual that was supposed to be in the apartment, so she intentionally ran the car into the door."

Police did not release the intended victim’s name but said the two had been in a relationship.

'STRUCTURALLY SAFE'

Bova was treated then released from the hospital the same morning and then processed at the police station before arraignment in Brighton Town Court before Town Justice Nik Santigate.

She is charged with first-degree attempted assault and second-degree criminal mischief, both felonies; misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, though she refused blood alcohol testing; and reckless driving.

The building’s façade includes three bay windows.

“The car went partially into the apartment,” Nason said.

Police called the village code officer in to inspect the damage on Sunday morning.

Nason said it did not render the building structurally unsafe. But the hole had to be covered with plywood and plastic as a temporary measure in order to protect the interior from cold and stormy weather.
