SARANAC LAKE — A Bloomingdale man was arrested on felony assault charges.
Monroe F. Gladd III, 35, was arrested by Saranac Lake Police at 11 a.m. Monday following an investigation into a physical altercation involving Gladd outside a local establishment, the name of which police would not release, at 11:50 p.m. Oct. 27.
Gladd was charged with third-degree assault as a hate crime, a felony. The incident has been labeled a hate crime because of racist comments allegedly made by Gladd before, during and after the alleged assault. Witnesses to the incident attested to the comments, Saranac Lake Police Chief Bruce Nason said.
Gladd was arraigned Monday in St. Armand Town Court and released on his own recognizance to appear in Saranac Lake Village Court at a later date.
Bernard J. McCormick, 28, of Vermontville was arrested in connection with the same alleged assault at 10:47 p.m. Sunday.
McCormick was charged with third-degree assault as a hate crime.
He was arraigned at the Village of Saranac Lake Court and remanded to Franklin County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash or $30,000 bond.
