PLATTSBURGH — A SUNY Plattsburgh student was hit by a car in a Rugar Street crosswalk and seriously injured at about 10 p.m. Friday.

The student, Caryn Rich, was transported to CVPH Medical Center, and then transferred to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt..

Michelle, Ouellette, the college’s director of public relations and publications, said Sunday that Rich had since been released from the hospital and returned to the campus.

However, no further details of the accident were being released Sunday, and the incident continues to be investigated, according to Ouellette.

She added that pedestrian safety is of great importance to SUNY Plattsburgh, which recently worked with the city to install button-operated crossing signals along Rugar Street.

The lighted signals have been in place for a couple of months, Ouellette said.

In addition, she noted, the college is looking into installing raised crosswalks that would act as speed bumps on the street.

“It really is a situation where we need motorists to be careful and students to be careful when they cross the road,” Ouellette said.
