Newsmakers: Sept. 14, 2013.

Kanoa General of Jay, a licensed massage therapist, attended advanced orthopedic massage for neck and upper extremity problems with Whitney Lowe, director of the Orthopedic Massage Education & Research Institute. The instruction was held in Connecticut. General is a member of the New York Chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association and is nationally certified through the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork. He is owner of Blue Turtle Healing, a mobile massage business serving Lake Placid and surrounding communities.

Nicole Bryant of Moriah has been appointed to the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System, to represent Essex County. Bryant received her master’s degree in social work from Adelphi University, Long Island. Following a 30-year career with Essex County in the mental-health field, she retired in 2010 as director of Essex County Mental Health/Community Services.

David M. Schraver of Rochester, brother of the late Carl Schraver who lived in Morrisonville, has been named president of the New York State Bar Association. A graduate of Harvard University and the University of Michigan Law School, he is a partner in the law firm of Nixon Peabody. After law school, he was on active duty in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps. His sister-in-law, Edrie Schraver, lives in Morrisonville.

Ryan F. Sponable graduated from the Recruit Firefighter Training Program at the State Office of Fire Prevention and Control’s Academy of Fire Science in Montour Falls. He is with the Plattsburgh Fire Department.

Tracy Guynup has begun serving as SUNY Plattsburgh’s new veterans support coordinator and Clinton Community College’s assistant registrar and veteran affairs coordinator. A graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh, Guynup will help students navigate unusual situations that may arise, like being called up for active duty in the reserves.

At the 199th graduation ceremonies of the New York State Police Basic School, Trooper Zachary A. Eppler of Plattsburgh received the Joseph T. Aversa Physical Training Award for achieving the highest score of all 192 troopers. He is assigned to Troop B. In addition, area residents who completed the training and are assigned to Troop B include Jonathan R. Bailey of Plattsburgh, Pamela S. Corey of Saranac,Jordon M. Darrah of Plattsburgh, Michelle L. Fortier of Tupper Lake, Brad T. Lincoln of North Lawrence, Jeremy E. Scott of Plattsburgh, Paul R. Scott Jr. of Malone and James A. Vanvalkenburg of Morrisonville.

The SUNY Board of Trustees has approved the appointment of SUNY Plattsburgh member Dr. Mary Roden-Tice to the rank of distinguished teaching professor. She is one of five faculty members from 64 SUNY campuses to be appointed to this rank this year. Her major areas of expertise include geochronology, fission track dating, thermochronology, geochemistry, isotope geology and igneous and metamorphic petrology.
